Tracing the sources of excess sediments in Canning River pools
(in progress, due for completion by October 31, 2025)
Summary: For my dissertation research at The University of Western Australia with DBCA, I am investigating sediment sources and transport processes in the Canning River catchments. My research involves:
- Conducting field investigations across tributaries and main stems, deploying self-made passive sediment samplers and collecting total suspended solids (TSS) and discharge data using a flow tracker.
- Analysing sediment samples in the UWA laboratory with Particle Size Analysis (PSA), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and ICP-OES to determine particle size distribution and geochemical composition.
- Integrating field and laboratory data to identify sediment sources, trace pollutant pathways, and assess implications for riverine rehabilitation and catchment management strategies.
This research strengthens the understanding of sediment dynamics in a critical Perth waterway, supporting evidence-based approaches to water quality improvement and ecosystem restoration.
